It was... a special kind of soot.

I suspect it came from the Lord Grandfather, or someone close to him.

The effects of it didn't last long I hope.

... They distribute more of it each week. To ensure it doesn't wear off.

But every week, we have to avoid it again and again.

What is the point? To keep your... partner complacent?

I assume so. So long as everyone is kept brainwashed, no one can oppose the authority of the house.
